Approaching sinners has been a disputed, but widely accepted topic for years. How do we reach out to them? How do we convince them? How do we convert them? The answer is: LOVE. In the Bible it says to love everyone. No matter what they have done, where they have been, or how much they have sinned. John 13:34 says, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love another.” Loving the people who love us is easy. Everyone can do that. Loving the ones who hate us is the challenge. Christians are sometimes despised by the world because our beliefs don’t agree with their worldly lusts. John 15:18 says, “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.” In the Bible they mocked Jesus. They beat him and hung him on a cross to die. Yet, he loved us all. He loved us enough to die so that we could go to Heaven and have peace. If sinners mock you, disagree with you, make fun of your beliefs, just remember that Jesus endured far, far worse and still loved us unconditionally.
Some preachers want to preach strictly through conviction. Conviction is necessary to make people realize their sins and know that they are wrong, but you need love to let them know that there is an answer. Showing sinners compassion instead of pushing them away is a big way of showing love. Let them know that you care and you want to see them saved. During their time of conviction they may be defensive or deny that God is speaking to them. This is when they need love the most. Reassure them that God will forgive them if they just ask. It’s that simple. Just ask God for forgiveness and ask Him to come into your heart and accept Christ as your savior.
Some Christians will say that God doesn’t hear a sinner’s prayers. This is most certainly untrue. If God never heard a sinner’s prayers, how could we pray for forgiveness? God hears all prayers no matter whom they are coming from. Sinners are not much different than Christians. Christians have been bought by the blood of Jesus Christ and promised to live for Him. We are all human. We will make mistakes. We will fail sometimes. But God forgives us and helps us carry on living for Him. We are all sinners; Christians are just forgiven sinners. Just think back to before you were saved. How did you feel sitting in church? Did you feel nervous? Confused? Disbelieving? Out of place for being a sinner in church? You needed someone to reach out to you and show you it was real. Show you that God can change your life and make you spiritually and morally sound. We are all born sinners, there’s no denying that but we ALL, yes EVERYONE, can be saved.
Pointing out all the small miracles that God performs everyday could help you reach out to sinners. Once they see what God can do, they will want to know more. If they ask questions, answer them. Give them examples of situations from the Bible and how God helped or saved people in the Bible. But also explain to them that sins have consequences and God does not play favorites. God loves sinners just as much as He loves Christians. The only difference is, Christians love Him back and praise Him and thank Him for loving them. God doesn’t segregate sin either. Everyone’s sin is equal and everyone can be saved just the same. God won’t give up on sinners, so we shouldn’t. Invite them to church or tell them how good God is to you. A Christian life isn’t the easiest life, but it’s definitely the most rewarding.
Be an example. Be the best Christian you can be. If a sinner sees you worshipping and praising in church, then not being a very good influence out in public or hiding your beliefs just so people think you’re cool, you wouldn’t be a good Christian. That’s not to say that you won’t make a mistake here and there but show them that you can make it right and ask God for forgiveness. Just be open-minded and never be afraid to show your love for God. Sinners will realize what they are missing out on and want to find the peace that you show to the world.
